Simple UTV Maintenance
Just like a car, doing a little bit of maintenance can go a long way in extending the life of your UTV. We all know that it can really screw up your whole day if you get ready to go only to find that your utility vehicle isn't running.
[I:http://motorcaravanworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/RickGeorge1.jpg]Utility vehicles first provided a familiar way for people to get off road. They have evolved to perform not just to provide riding pleasure, but to be a very versatile tool for hauling cargo, personnel, and tools. Like any machine with an engine, you need to be prepared to maintain it. Following these few tips can keep your side by side running smooth for an extended product life.
With so many UTVs on the market for sale from a lot of different manufacturers, it is very important to check your owners manual for a service schedule that should outline what to check and how often you should. Not everyone is mechanically inclined, so if you are not, it is a good idea to take your side x side to a qualified mechanic for any major repairs.
A good rule to follow is to do some seasonal maintenance. Every Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall you should take an hour or two to properly service your unit. You may need a few simple tools like a set of wrenches, oil pan, and screwdrivers to get the job done. The main items on the UTV checklist should be your engine oil and oil filter, air filter, tire pressure, as well as tightening any loose nuts and bolts that you find.
Long engine life can be achieved simply by regularly changing your oil and oil filter. Contaminates are not good for your engine, and if you don't change the oil according to the manual then you are asking for trouble. Another good idea to follow is that if you are planning to store the machine and let it sit idle for a while you should go ahead and change the oil. Storing your utility vehicle for several months can allow the acids that build up in used motor oil to attack the internal components of the engine.
Many people do not realize the importance of having a clean air filter protecting your engine. As a general rule, a clogged air filter causes not only poor gas mileage but sluggish engine performance as well. Take a minute to open up the air filter housing to see what kind of air filter your machine has. Foam type filters can either be cleaned to save on costs or it can be replaced. Paper filters need to be replaced if they look dirty. Pull it out and smack it against your hand. If a dust cloud comes flying out, go ahead and replace it.

Vibration is the enemy here and can eventually fall out if you are not careful. It is a great idea to have a grease gun handy to lube your grease fittings while you are doing this portion of the maintenance. A quick shot of WD40 on moving parts that do not have grease fittings can help to displace any water that plans on rusting these components out.
