Used RVs: Hitting The Road And Safety
No matter whether you are about to take your first trip or your 30th, safety must come first in your recreational vehicle. Used RVs may take different safety measures than that of a new RV. Follow the tips below for safety with used RVs and hit the road with less worry.
Used RVs and Safety: Before Leaving
1. First, check the used RVs belts and hoses. Do this before getting on the road. If any need to be replaced, then do so. Make sure they work as they are supposed to before driving.
2. Ask a friend or family member to check all of the lights in all used RVs before hitting the road. This will include the blinkers, the head and tail lights, and dashboard lights.
3. Most all used RVs will have tires that have been traveled on before. Thus, it is important to look at the tire pressure and tread before hitting the road.
4. If you are towing another vehicle or a fifth wheeler, then make sure you have the proper towing equipment. Some used RVs may need an upgrade to ensure towing safety.
5. Leave important emergency contact information with a friend or family member.
6. If the recreational vehicle has a fire extinguisher, it should not be expired. If there are fire alarms, make sure the batteries work and that you take extra batteries with you.
7. Clean the hood above the oven to avoid kitchen fires.
8. Take the insurance papers in the RV with you when driving. Make sure all papers are up to date before hitting the road.
9. Write down the used RVs height and weight dimensions and limits to avoid issues when driving.
When on the road:
1. Fasten your seatbelt and make sure your passenger has seatbelt fastened whenever the motor home is in motion.
2. Pay attention to your surroundings and practice good skills when driving.
3. When you turn or use the brakes, make sure you use the proper signals and distance. Driving a used RV is different than driving a regular car. You want to make sure other drivers on the road know what you are doing through proper signaling.
4. When you approach hills or curves, adjust your speed accordingly. This is also important when changing lanes, too.
5. It is important not to increase your speed when you approach a yellow light. This could be very dangerous.
6. Use warning triangles when you pull over to the side of the road with a flat tire or for any reason. Also, it is wise to use your hazards in such situations.
7. If you are driving on a wet highway or in the snow, pay extra care. You want to only drive in good visibility weather, so don?t be afraid to pull over if necessary.
8. One of the most important rules is to stay off of the phone when driving. Let others answer if it rings, and definitely let others do the dialing.
