A Great Caravan Get-Together
In my line of work, finding cheap deals on caravan insurance always seems like the most important thing. I'm an insurance broker specialising in caravan insurance and so I've always thought that finding great policies at great prices was essential.
Recently, however, I discovered that cheap caravan insurance is not caravan owner's biggest concern. It seems that having fun comes much further up the line. I discovered this at a 40th birthday.
I was invited to a party on a caravan site. There would be loads of mates arriving in 8 caravans, supplemented by a number of hangers on with tents. In all, 50 revellers gathered in a field in Norfolk for one of the best parties I have ever attended. The selection of caravans was incredible. Karen and Richard, our entrepreneur friends arrived with their Vanmaster Occasion which was being pulled by a new Range Rover (I wouldn't mind having their insurance account). As far as I could see, the caravan would have qualified as a 5 star hotel if it had a swimming pool. Our "still young at heart extreme sport" friends, Jeff and Sally arrived in a 1960s VW camper, and Alison and Luke, the eco warriors brought their "little Guy" caravan that was being pulled by the world's smallest car, powered by a hairdryer. My wife and I were – as you might imagine – part of the tented hanger on section.
We started the day with a big game of rounders. The sun was beating down and the drink began flowing and as this went on the bowling got wilder and the batting got considerably less effective. There was a huge pig-roast being prepared in the background of all this and the smell seemed to engulf the whole area, it felt like the whole of Norfolk would be able to find us if they wanted to.
The daytime was idled away as old friends chatted and ate and drank their fill. The pros and cons of caravan holidays and caravans in general were discussed and I told them in passing that I was a caravan insurance broker but I don't think anyone was really listening. Of course, in these situations background music is a must and in this case it was being provided by our friends William and Penny whose Mercedes soft-top must have come with some sort of mobile disco installed.
Before we knew it an evening breeze was sending most of us to our cars to fetch jumpers and cardigans while the seasoned campers knew exactly how to build the perfect camp fire, so they set to work. Our friends Alison and Luke (the ones with the 60's VW and the tiny car) had somehow managed to squeeze their guitars into their tiny car and so we had a bit of a sing song, and for the first time in a LONG while, I forgot all about caravan insurance.
I left that party wishing that I had spent more time getting to know how great it is to own a caravan and less time selling cheap caravan insurance.
