Camping in France, either in tents or with caravans, is a hugely popular activity both with French citizens and foreigners from bordering European nations. France owns thousands of camping grounds scattered all over the country which means wherever you happened to be in France you'll never be a long away from a camping ground.

Even if there is not camping ground nearby , many hostels in France let you to put up tents in the back garden. Many camping grounds in France are located near rivers, lakes and even the ocean making for impressive surroundings.

Camping sites are of course not seen anywhere near locations of historic interest in France and hence it will be better if you can make your own arrangements for travelling between the camping site and the visiting place.

Many camping grounds are kept closed throughout winter in France and some of them are kept open only for a few months in summer. This is because of the fact that France attracts many visitors in summer who prefer to camp and hence camping sites are overcrowded.

This is, among other things, because of the long school holidays in France during the summer, which is when most French families take their annual holidays.

If you arrive at a busy camping ground in the summer late in the day, you may find there is no room to accommodate you. However, if you make a point of going on foot you're far less likely to be turned away and the staff will try to find somewhere to accommodate you.

Camping grounds in France give varying costings for the tourists depending upon the amenities they offer. These camping sites are also rated between 2 and 4 stars as according to the facilities they provide.

Electricity charges are added of course to the caravan charges. There is a specified price for a group of three people to stay in these camping grounds in France with great discount packages obtainable for children below 12 years of age.

Unlicensed camping, called camping sauvage in French, is unlawful and could get you in trouble. However, a lot of people still do it. Provided you only set up camp for one night, take down the tent in the day, don't make much din and don't light a camp fire, you'll in all likelihood get away with illegal camping in France.
