Insuring a Campervan

If you are looking to insure a camper van you have to look at the RV part of the insurers' catalog or website since a camper van is known as a class B RV. Camper van insurance coverage is no different from car insurance, except for the fact that it has a few more insurance options for you to choose from.

Below is a list of the insurance options you have available when you want to insure a camper van…

Liability insurance- This type of insurance is required in every single state except for Wisconsin and New Hampshire. Rather than insuring you directly, it insures you by paying for expenses for which you are responsible for in an accident, in which you are found to be at fault.

Liability is made up of two coverages, property damage liability and bodily injury liability. Property damage pays for damage done to other cars and property, such as fences. Bodily injury will pay for other peoples' medical expenses.

Collision insurance- This will pay for the cost to repair your campervan after an accident, regardless of who caused it. This is why it is mandatory to get this coverage if you finance a camper van, because it protects the lenders investment.

GAP- Another name for Guaranteed Auto Protection, which will pay the difference between how much you owe in financing fees and how much the van insurance company will pay you.

Personal Injury Protection- Similar to health insurance coverage.

Uninsured/underinsured- If you get into an accident and the other driver was at fault, their liability insurance should pay your damages. This coverage protects you if their coverage is not enough.

Other than the aforementioned insurance options, there are insurance types specifically for recreational vehicles…

Personal belongings insurance- Because a campervan is almost like your house, you need to insure the things within it by talking to your home insurance provider.

Total Loss Replacement Coverage- If you have this type of insurance, and your van is totaled in an accident, you'll get a brand new RV, even if it more expensive than the used one, which was totaled. If you have TLR, GAP is likely superfluous.

Emergency Expense RV Coverage- This would pay for hotel and transportation expenses if your campervan needs some time in the shop.

Vacation Liability Insurance- This type of coverage will pay for bodily injury or property damage that happens at a vacation site and for which you are responsible for.
